Mary Maughelli

MaryMaughelli’s work is art about art and relies on images from art history especially the Venus figure from Botticelli and Titian as well as the Aphrodite figure which are compared to and interwoven with contemporary images of women. The paintings are about identity, the body, the human female figure and its strengths and weaknesses. Through the juxtaposition of the figure from the past and present together with symbols, a more unique view of the body results which rellies on personal associations rather than on descriptive imagery ex- clusively.

Mary Maughelli is a Professor Emerita of Art from California State University, Fresno where she taught art for 35 years. She earned her BA and MA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 and 1959 respectively. While there she was awarded the Fulbright Fellowship to Florence, Italy in painting for two years. She has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally including 14 years at AIR Gallery in New York.
