Unfinished Business

For the month of March, Gallery 25 member, Jim Campbell will have a Solo Exhibit. The artist returns to his earlier
investigation of the geometric form and has produced a new series of paintings based on geometric forms, color and the
illusion of space and dimension. The artist explores the unbridled joy of violating the two dimensional picture plane and how perspective influences the viewer. In particular the artist explores the rectilinear shapes which he feels
provides a sense of orderliness, security and peace as an anecdote to chaos that can crop up on a semi-regular basis in his life.

artist's statement

This new series of paintings is an investigation of geometric forms, color, the illusion of space and dimension, the unbridled joy of violating the two-dimensional picture plane, and how perspective influences the viewer. I first began these investigations when I was a student of Dal Henderson and Terry Allen in the art department at Fresno State in 1970-1972. I took a hiatus from these kinds of paintings for about thirty-five years and have only recently returned to them.

I’ve always been attracted to geometric figures, particularly rectilinear ones. When I view these images, I find that they provide me with a feeling of orderliness, security, and peace, an anecdote to the chaos that crops up on a semi-regular basis in my life.

Although our work is dissimilar, I feel a strong kinship with the painter Agnes Martin. She also relies on the use of rectilinear figures in her paintings. In a documentary titled, “Agnes Martin:With My Back To The World”, she states that she didn’t find the rectangle, but, rather, it found her. When viewing her work, I feel as though I’m entering through a portal into a space that lets my mind roam freely, unfettered by expectation or anxiety; an experience that leaves me feeling at peace, centered, and fulfilled, reinforcing the idea that the world is full of possibility and wonder.

Hopefully, the work in this show will provide at least a few viewers to enter such a space.
